How’s Your Aim?

I saw this photo recently of a friend, former Bible Study Fellowship leader and current US Senator from Montana Steve Daines sighting in his hunting rifle, and I immediately thought of 2 Corinthians 5:9. It’s big game hunting season across most of America, and for those that hunt, having good aim is important to putting meat in the freezer.

Your Aim smallAs you can see in the photo, Steve is looking through a scope which helps to get rid of all distractions around him. it has cross-hairs for zeroing in on the the target and helps aim correctly, and accurately. Similarly, the Bible says we are to take aim on something important.

“Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:9

The context of this passage tells us how to aim, and what to aim at:
2 Corinthians 5:1-8 tells us about the next life after ours here on earth ends.
Then this verse 2 Corinthians 5:9 tells us to take careful aim…to be well pleasing to God.
Then 2 Corinthians 5:10 tells us we will be given a job to do in Heaven based on what we do here on earth.

That is what you are aiming at…that is your target…your future life in Heaven doing the job God gives you, which He gives based on how pleasing of a job you did here.

I am guessing you want to be given a really good job since you will be doing it for eternity. Having one better than we have here now would sure be nice, wouldn’t it!?

Our focus here on earth should be having an eternal perspective in everything we do, by faith, and giving our best effort in whatever we are doing. When we do, we will be well pleasing to God.

Do you work hard at your job? Is your boss pleased with you? Do your co-workers know the hope you have as 1 Peter 3:15 says? Is enhancing the Kingdom of God your priority, as Matthew 6:33 says it should be?

Make sure you are sighted in accurately, and you know what you are aiming for. Like a hunter looking through a rifle scope, don’t worry about the distractions around you, and take careful aim “to be well pleasing to Him”.
